June 2025 Update

Lunch Update: As we mentioned last month, all six of HIP’s AmeriCorps workers have been terminated or put on unpaid leave by DOGE and the Trump administration. You can read HIP’s full statement here: https://hungerintervention.org/2025/04/29/urgent-update-cuts-to-the-americorps-program-and-the-harms-to-our-community/

HIP has found some temporary solutions to help retain staff throughout the summer, however, our lunch program will likely be impacted at some point. While we do not know exactly what that will look like, we will do our best to keep you updated with any changes to our program as soon as we find out about them.

John is back at Lake City Seniors three days a week and Tech help has resumed regular hours. To schedule an appointment with John, please give him a call at (206) 268-6741

Here’s a look at the programming we have going on this month:

  • On Friday, June 6th from 1pm to 3pm, we will be holding a Tech Support Resource fair. Digital Navigator John will be joined by tech-savvy volunteers who would love to meet you and offer support. No appointments necessary. Simply stop by to meet volunteers from Cambia Health and Accenture who are partnering with Sound Generations to host this event. Enjoy refreshments and snacks, engaging conversation, a gratitude station where you can create a collage that inspires you and reflects on what you’re grateful for, a letter writing station where you can write letters to others who could use a message of hope and inspiration, and a tech support station to help you access your resources.
  • Join Silver Screeners for popcorn and a movie followed by a discussion with a volunteer from Scarecrow Video. This month’s movie will be Best in Show and will be shown on Monday, June 9th at 1:30pm. Best in Show is a behind-the-scenes look into the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows through the eyes of a group of ruthless dog owners.
  • On June 11th and June 25th at 1:30pm join our social worker, Syl, for Roundtable Conversations. In these social roundtables, he will lead you through light, thought-provoking conversations designed to spark reflection and build new friendships. Each session starts with a fun icebreaker, followed by a relaxed discussion around a broad topic relevant to our lives and experiences. Whether you’re a regular or new to the center, Roundtable Conversations is a space to engage, listen, and share with fellow community members you may not usually get to know. Everyone is welcome!
  • On Monday, June 16th at 1:30pm Dr. Shivani Patel will hold a presentation on Hearing Loss. In this presentation she will discuss how to identify and understand hearing loss and how hearing loss can be associated with other health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, risk of falls, social isolation and cognitive decline. She will also discuss options for treating hearing loss as well as myths and facts surrounding hearing aids.
  • On Friday June 20th we will hold a Tech Repairs Workshop at 1:00pm. No personal devices are required! This workshop will discuss:
    • Refurbishing basics and what to look for in a reliable, secondhand device
    • How to recycle electronics responsibly
    • Practical tips to avoid viruses and online scams
    • Simple recovery steps in case someone falls for a scam
  • On Monday, June 23rd at 1:30pm Trichell from Salaal Credit Union will hold a fraud prevention presentation where you will discuss what elder abuse and financial exploitation is, current scams that are around and how they relate to you, how to protect yourself and resources that are available to you.
  • The Pro Bono Council will be back on Wednesday, June 26th for one-on-one legal planning. At the Legal Planning clinic, you can connect with an attorney for free for legal help completing power of attorney and advance directive documents. An appointment is required. Call (425) 780-5589 to schedule your appointment.
  • On Monday, June 30th, the Mobile Community Service Office from the Department of Social and Health Services will be visiting to provide one-on-one help from 10:00am-2:00pm. At this event you can apply for Cash Assistance, Basic food assistance, medical assistance, and the Medicare savings program. You can also drop off paperwork, complete an eligibility review, mid-certification review or make changes to an existing case.
  • John will teach two classes AI in June. On Friday, June 13th at 10am we will discuss: What is AI? In this class you will learn the basics of AI and what exactly it is. We will discuss current events and learn where it might be going next. On Friday, June 27th at 10am we will discuss: How to Use Simple AI Tools. In this class you will learn about available simple tools to use AI. We will discuss ways AI can be helpful and how you can use it to find information and organize your plans.
