May 2025 Update

In an effort to be as transparent as possible, we wanted to update you on some of the changing circumstances around the lunch program. As you may have heard, last week all six of HIP’s AmeriCorps workers were terminated or put on unpaid leave by DOGE and the Trump administration. This includes Zahraa, Cameron, Alyssa, Aidyn, Charlotte, and Amariah. You can read HIP’s full statement here: https://hungerintervention.org/2025/04/29/urgent-update-cuts-to-the-americorps-program-and-the-harms-to-our-community/

Since last week, HIP has found some temporary solutions to help retain staff on a limited basis, however, our lunch program will likely be impacted going forward. While we do not know exactly what that will look like, we will do our best to keep you updated with any changes to our program as soon as we find out about them.

John will be back at Lake City Seniors three days a week and Tech help will resume regular hours starting Friday, May 2nd. To schedule an appointment with John, please give him a call at (206) 268-6741

A reminder that we will not hold any programming on Monday, May 26th in observation of Memorial Day. There will also be no meals served so please plan accordingly.

Here’s a look at the programming we have going on this month:

  • Join Silver Screeners for popcorn and a movie followed by a discussion with a volunteer from Scarecrow Video. This month’s movie will be Erin Brockovich and will be shown on Monday, May 12th at 1:30pm. Erin Brockovich is an American biographical legal drama. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Erin Brockovich, portrayed by Julia Roberts, who initiated a legal case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company over its culpability for the Hinkley groundwater contamination incident.
  • John will teach a series of classes on digital entertainment in May. Join one, or all the classes on Fridays at 10am! The topics will be: Games and Apps on Friday, May 2nd; Photos and Art on Friday, May 16th; Streaming Music and Podcasts on Friday, May 23rd; and Streaming Videos on Friday, May 30th. NO registration is required.
  • On Friday, June 6th from 1pm to 3pm, we will be holding a Tech Support Resource fair. Digital Navigator John will be joined by tech-savvy volunteers who would love to meet you and offer support. No appointments necessary. Simply stop by to meet volunteers from Cambia Health and Accenture who are partnering with Sound Generations to host this event. Enjoy refreshments and snacks, engaging conversation, a gratitude station where you can create a collage that inspires you and reflects on what you’re grateful for, a letter writing station where you can write letters to others who could use a message of hope and inspiration, and a tech support station to help you access your resources.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the program! For more information on our programming, calendar, and lunch menu, please follow the links to the right of the page.
