October 2024 Update

Why does everyone love October?

Because it is a month that everyone falls for each year.

This month we are launching a new communication service to provide more timely reminders and information regarding Lake City Senior Center. If you haven’t already, you will soon receive a notification once the service has started. We plan to keep our use of the service limited while we learn the program, but we eventually will use it to communicate important information such as newsletters, class cancellations, program closures, and appointment reminders. If you have any questions, please reach out to any of the Lake City Senior staff and we will be happy to answer them.

As you may have noticed, our program is busier than ever before! We are so excited to welcome all the new participants to Lake City Seniors. With our increased participation, we want to be mindful of everyone’s needs and do our best to make Lake City Seniors the most welcoming program we can be.

We recognize that lunch has been busier than usual, and we are working to add more seating. While we work through solutions, we are asking that you do not save seats for people who are not in the building. Saving seats for those who are not here makes new participants feel unwelcome and less likely to return to the program. If you are having trouble finding a seat, please ask David or Aidyn in the kitchen for help and we will find a spot for you.

Here’s some program highlight for Lake City Seniors this month:

  • With the roll out of our new communication platform, the staff of Lake City Seniors will be tabling downstairs to ensure that we have the most up-to-date contact information for everyone. We will be tabling downstairs from Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 18th. If you have filled out a contact form in the past few months, you will not need to fill out another one.
  • Join Silver Screeners for popcorn and a movie followed by a discussion with a volunteer from Scarecrow Video. This month’s movie will be Coraline on Monday, October 14th at 1:30pm. The movie is about a girl named Coraline who discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever.
  • John will hold two tech classes on Monday, October 14th and Monday, October 28th at 10am. On October 14th, join us for a class on Scam Messages. Learn about common scams happening recently and the signs you can look for to stay safe. We will review examples of messages, learn about red flags, and learn how to report and block these messages. On October 28th join us for a class on the Settings Menu. Learn about what the settings menu is on your device and what you can do to make your device run smoothly. We will learn ways to make your device easier to see and hear, how to check your battery and storage, and how to customize your device to your preferences.
  • On Monday, October 28th End of Life Washington will be out to discuss Advance Care Planning. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to reduce anxiety for yourself and your loved ones and how to plan so that you can receive the medical care that you want.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the program! For more information on our programming, calendar, and lunch menu, please follow the links to the right of the page.

Cheers!
