We hope everyone had an amazing holiday!

As we head into winter, we’d like to remind everyone of our inclement weather policy at the Lake City Senior program. If the weather causes schools’ opening times to be delayed, our opening time will be delayed and programming starting before the new opening time will be canceled. If schools are closed, the center will be closed, and all programming will be canceled. Please click here for more information.

We will also be closing the center starting December 23rd in observation of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. There will be no programming from December 23rd– January 2nd. Programming will return January 4th. There will also be no Lunches at the center these dates so please plan accordingly.

Even though things are winding down for the upcoming holidays, we still have some exciting programming coming up in December.

On December 14th at 1:30pm Susan, who normally leads Folk Dancing for us, will be holding a Holiday Card Making workshop. Come and get your arts and crafts on and this fun and creative workshop! Susan will also be holding her usual Folk Dancing class on Friday, December 16th at 10am.

On December 21st, our Digital Equity Coordinator, John, will be hosting a digital photo management class. This class will provide tips and recommendations for managing photos on your devices. We will discuss how to organize photo storage space, how to safely back up photos, and how to share photos with others.

We hope everyone is staying cool as the summer heats up.
This month we said goodbye to Jennifer. She has accepted a position at Swedish First Hill and her last day was July 22nd. We’re grateful for all that she has contributed and wish her well on her journey. She’ll be greatly missed.

Thankfully, your technology needs will still be taken care of with our new digital equity coordinator, John. John is joining the team to assist community members with technology resources and help troubleshoot technology issues. He studied Electrical Engineering and is experienced in solving all sorts of problems with computers, phones, and other devices. He knows tech can be frustrating and wants to help others feel more comfortable using their devices to connect with their community. John loves a good card game with friends and playing trumpet with the North Seattle jazz ensemble. He looks forward to learning how he can help you use tech to connect to the things that you love.

This month we have a multitude of new and continuing programs. The Knitting and Crocheting Social Hour is continuing every Wednesday from 11am-12:30pm. We have received more yarn and we now have crocheting hooks and knitting needles! If you have been interested in joining, but lack of materials has kept you away, come join the group! Everyone is welcome!

We are also excited to bring back Mahjong. This will be held every Wednesday and Friday from 1:00pm-2:30pm. We already have a good-sized group who informally started in late July, but now it’s official. Come get your Mahjong on!

John will also be holding technology help seminars starting this month. The first two planned will be Smartphone Help and Internet and Computer Help.

Wednesday, August 24th at 1:30pm: Smartphone Help – The goal of this class is to help you feel more comfortable using a smartphone. In this class we will go over resources available for discount smartphone and phone services, general tips for using your smartphone, and how to troubleshoot issues with your smartphone.

Wednesday, August 31st at 1:30pm: Internet and Computer Help – The goal of this class is to help you feel more comfortable using a computer and the internet. In this class we will go over resources available for discount computer and internet services, general tips for using your computer, and how to get help solving computer issues.

July 22nd: Urban Wildlife

This class focuses on the common bird species of Seattle. Karen will cover different species, how and where to spot them, and listening to common bird calls. There will be cool bird props and an introduction to the birdsong app!

There is no registration required. Just bring yourself and be ready to learn fun new things!

Summer is officially here! It sure took its sweet time.

A reminder that Monday, July 4th the center will be closed in observation of the holiday. There will also be no lunch that day so please plan accordingly.

A huge shout out to all of those who completed Matter of Balance and received your certificates! Congratulations y’all. You rock!

We have quite a few new and exciting things happening at the center this month.

On Wednesday, July 13th at 1:30pm we will have a visit from Leah Crane, a family service counselor from the Acacia Memorial Park & Funeral Home. Learn the answers to all your questions, and answers to questions you didn’t know you had! This interactive seminar focuses on funeral care and cemetery planning basics and regulations. We’ll discuss why and how to plan for your funeral needs, funded or not, whether or not you plan to have memorial services. You will learn how to make sure your family is protected, your wishes are carried out how you want, and ensure the right people have the final say.
 
On Monday, July 17th at 1:30pm there will be a class called Love Food, Stop Waste. Join this class put on by Tilth Alliance to learn tips on storing food to make it last longer, using leftovers efficiently, and shopping and not overbuying at the grocery store. This class will be held online through Zoom. The link to that is here. But everyone is more than welcome to come to the center to participate as well. We will have the projector set up so that everyone can participate in the zoom call.

We will be starting a Knitting and Crocheting social hour that will be conducted by Lucy Weinberg. It’ll be every Wednesday from 11am-12:30pm. Bring your current projects to sit and craft and chat with others! And we have some yarn at the center to help get you started. We are currently in the process of procuring knitting needles and crochet hooks so in the meantime you will need to bring your own (or borrow from a friend!)
